Weekly roundup Saturday 21 December
Sorry – these panels have to give way to Dutton’s nukes
Weekly roundup of links to articles, reports, podcasts and other media on current political and economic issues in public policy.
This is the last roundup for 2024, covering only the Coalition's nuclear policy and Treasury’s Mid Year Economic Outlook. Back on Saturday February 1 with regular roundups.
The Coalition’s nuclear fantasy
Higher power prices, more CO2 emissions, private investment stalled, more stress on public budgets, the end of rooftop solar, generally bad engineering: will the media explain that to the voting public? And some observations from Ross Gittins on what’s driving electricity prices.
The Mid Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook
The MYEFO shows little change from the May budget’s forecast of economic and fiscal conditions. The government’s fiscal path is slightly expansionary: that’s OK for a sluggish economy. The fiscal deficit is small for now, but the government must address the need to raise enough taxation to fund public services.
Safe summer
