August 15 — India’s Independence Day
Today is India’s Independence Day, it’s 80th, celebrating its independence from British colonial rule on 15 August 1947. The official celebrations will be rather militaristic, but here is how Pandit Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushaka celebrated Independence Day in 2009.
It’ a reminder that 125 years after Federation we have not asserted full independence. Our head of state is the monarch of a distant foreign country, and we still don’t have a flag that is truly Australian.
