“Ode an die Freude

Tuesday 7 May marked 200 years since Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was first played to the public. You can hear Megan Burselm of ABC Classic describe that first performance and the audience’s rapturous enjoyment. This was in Vienna in 1824, a society that could be described at the time as an oppressive police state, not where one might have expected to hear a celebration of joy and friendship.

You can watch a flashmob of the Philharmonie Nürnberg and the Hans-Sachs-Chor Nürnberg playing and singing the final movement Ode an die Freude in 2014.
