Deine Mami
Wednesday was the 80th anniversary of the start of the Warsaw Uprising. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has travelled to Poland to ask for forgiveness.
As a reminder of the Holocaust you can hear the Sydney Children’s Choir singing Deine Mami, performed at the Sydney Jewish Museum.
Deine Mami is a poem written by Cecile Merel to her daughter Nelly in 1936. She escaped from Germany in 1938 with Nelly, migrating to Australia. Many other family members were murdered in the Holocaust. (The Museum has a short biography of Nelly Merel.)
The poem was set to music by Nelly’s grandson Sam Weiss. Below is the Liedtext, sung by the Sydney Children’s Choir:
Ich war bei Dir wohl manche Nacht, hast Du mich nicht erkannt?
Hab oft ob Deinen Schlaf gewacht und hielt still Deine Hand!
Ich lauschte Deinem Atemzug, wohl manche, manche Stund.
Und folgend meines Sehnens Flug, sprach Segen Dir mein Mund!
Da ward zum Lied mein stilles Wort und sang Dir tausendfach:
„Mit Deinem Wesen klingt es fort und tönt mir innig nach!”
Und Du, die Leben mir gebracht, neu in unser Einsamland!
Weißt Du vom Traum der stillen Nacht?
Sag: „Hast Du mich erkannt?”
