A modest move for reconciliation in a troubled land
Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra
In a 21-minute video there are orchestral extracts (Beethoven’s Symphony no 5, Mozart’s Symphony 39, ending with Beethoven’s Ode an die Freude) interspersed with explanations by Barenboim about the philosophy and workings of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, composed of Israeli and Arab musicians. The orchestra performs worldwide, but it is not welcome in the musicians’ home countries.
